Background of the Study: Teenage pregnancy is a significant public health issue in Nigeria, contributing to high maternal and infant morbidity and mortality rates. In Benue State, adolescent pregnancies are prevalent, with numerous socio-cultural and economic factors contributing to the high rates, including lack of sex education, cultural norms, and limited access to reproductive health services (Ezeh et al., 2024). Nurses, as trusted healthcare providers, are in an ideal position to offer sexual and reproductive health education to adolescents, both in clinical settings and through outreach programs.

Studies have shown that nurse-led education programs focused on sexual health, contraception, and the consequences of early pregnancies can effectively reduce teen pregnancy rates (Ahmed & Musa, 2023). These programs aim to equip young people with the knowledge and resources they need to make informed decisions about their sexual health. This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurse-led education on reducing teen pregnancy rates in Benue State, focusing on the role of nurses in providing education and resources to prevent early pregnancies.

Statement of the Problem: Teen pregnancy remains a major public health issue in Benue State, with significant negative impacts on the health and education of adolescent girls. While various interventions have been proposed to address this issue, the effectiveness of nurse-led education programs in reducing teen pregnancies has not been fully explored in this region. Understanding the role of nurses in promoting sexual health education and preventing teen pregnancy is essential for developing effective strategies to reduce this growing concern.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the impact of nurse-led education on teen pregnancy rates in Benue State.
  2. To evaluate the knowledge and attitudes of adolescents towards sexual health and contraception before and after participation in nurse-led education programs.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in delivering sexual and reproductive health education to adolescents.

Research Questions:

  1. What is the impact of nurse-led education on teen pregnancy rates in Benue State?
  2. How does participation in nurse-led education programs affect adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes towards sexual health?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in delivering sexual health education to adolescents in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurse-led education significantly reduces teen pregnancy rates in Benue State.
  2. Adolescents who participate in nurse-led education programs have increased knowledge and positive attitudes towards contraception and sexual health.
  3. Barriers such as cultural beliefs and lack of resources hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led sexual health education programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on nurse-led sexual health education programs targeting adolescents in Benue State. Limitations include possible biases in self-reported data from adolescents and limited access to certain regions for program implementation.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Teen Pregnancy: Pregnancy that occurs in females aged 13 to 19 years, often associated with higher risks for maternal and infant health.
  • Nurse-Led Education: Health education programs led by nurses, typically aimed at teaching adolescents about reproductive health, contraception, and pregnancy prevention.
  • Sexual Health: A state of physical, emotional, and social well-being in relation to sexuality, including the ability to make informed decisions about sexual activity.
